Campus Journalists Tour Lagos

It was a galore of experience and impartation as a popular press club in Petroleum Training Institute Effurun, Delta State  visited different media houses in Lagos. Sunday Egon and Idris Musbahu  report.


One of the reasons students join various creative groups on campus is to learn and grow, and this can be achieved most times when the learning is done practically. This and many other reasons was why The Actualizers' Team, a reputable press club in PTI  a. k.a Engineering Journalist deems it fit to take out time and resources to empower her members Knowledge wise by organizing a visit to different media outfits.


The tour served as a training ground for members of the team and also as a means of being familiar with operation of the media industry. Among the media houses visited were Encomium magazine, The Nations newspaper, Raypower FM, Faaji FM and Africa Independant Television (AIT).


The Actualizers' Team (TAT) is a press body on campus striving towards professionalism in the Petroleum Training Institute. TAT has been using campus journalism as a tool over the years to inform, educate, entertain and check campus vices among students. Over the years, TAT and her members though hardly known by other students for security reason, has trained so many students on journalism, of which some of them are now doing well in the media industry.


After a warm welcome to Encomium Magazine by a senior reporter, Mrs. Shade Wesley Metiboguno  was a powerful speech from the Chief Executive Officer of the Magazine, Mr. Kunle Bakare who enlightened the team about journalism and the current state of the economy, the effect of online media and the way forward.


The deputy editor of Encomium Magazine, Mr Tade Asifat in a brief lecture stretched more on how recession is affecting the media industry. He enjoined young journalists not to put pen on paper without fact and evidence. While rounding off his lecture, the renowned journalist who studied geography described journalism as a work of passion.


Meanwhile, Mr Lekan Otufodunrin, the online Editor welcomes The Actualizers' Team to The Nations Newspaper. Mr. Lekan gave the team an implicit explanation of the general nature of journalism, the code of ethics of a journalist, hints on how to write story, features, opinions and others. To further enlighten the young journalists, he presented journalism related books to the team after which he took the team around various departments that made up The nations newspaper.


At Raypower FM Faaji FM and AIT, introductory interaction commenced at the coporate affairs office, then proceeded to the editorial and studio section of Raypower FM thereafter,TAT joined engineering department of Raypower FM, Faaji FM and AIT, and completed the round of tour at the editorial and studio section of African Independent Television.


The high point of the tour was a visit to the Nation’s Newspaper Campus life editor, Mr Wale Ajetunmobi in his house. Mr wale, who was Involved in an accident explained to the team how the accident happened and appreciates the team for the visit. He shared numerous benefits of being a journalist with the students, to top up all that they have learnt so far.


To add spices to the visitation, The Actualizers' Team visited  Yaba college of technology, National stadium, Oniru beach and many more.


A member of the team who is the queen, of Igbo students Association, PTI Chapter, Nwoke Ada, from the department of Industrial Safety and environmental Technology department shared her excitement; "it was an interesting and educative tour," I learnt so much about journalism, she added.


Another member ;Osakwe Prosper, Vice President electrical and electronics engineering students association  shared his experience with campus life, he said "I have been well fed with insight to journalism,  with all I have learnt I might practise journalism after graduation."


Mirabith Oodo, the reigning most beautiful girl on campus (Miss PTI)  who was also on the trip, appreciates the leadership of the press club for such a brilliant initiative.


The President of club (The Actualizers Team) comrade Gbenga Ojo expresses his gratitude to God Almighty for a successful trip. He also appreciates the management of The Nation Newspaper, Encomium Magazine and DAAR Communication for their passion for younger generation. "I  doff my hat for all TAT Patrons and friends for making the trip a reality. He added.
