PTI Students Laud Principal for his Great Achievements

The current and graduated students of Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun Delta State gathered in mass recently to celebrate the institute Principal/CEO; Prof. Sunny Iyuke and his management team for a great achievement in the institute. Gbenga Ojo reports.

A year ago, during the school fees hike in the institute, the delegation of NANS, Ex Presidents & the present Executives of SUG PTI visited the CEO/ Principal Prof. Iyuke and he gave the delegation his words that in three months from that day if transformation is not noticed, that they should shut down the Institute.
The team has been on the watch ever since, until recently when they gathered together again to appreciate the management led by Prof. Iyuke saying  that he has delivered on his word.
It will be recalled that during President Olusegun Obasanjo's regime over 18billion naira was approved for the renovation of PTI, which kept still all the activities in the institute for over 12 months in 2007.
Few months after the renovation, the institute Students' Press body, popularly known as The Actualizer's Team (TAT) came up with an article titled "PTI Upgrade or DownGrade?" The press body explained in the article that the question on the lips of all the students on campus that were sent home for one year in the name of renovation came back to meet what they tagged "below expectation" as what they met was down grade and not upgrade. According to the article everything moved from good to bad. The student were reported to be wondering what the urge amount of money was used for, because many buildings were abandoned including hostels, class rooms, admin and many buildings left untouched. PTI moved with a great speed from grace to grass in that year.
From that 2007 till date many Principals and Acting Principals have ran the affairs of the institute with little or no achievement.
On the 19th July, 2016 the federal government appointed a renowned South African based professor of Chemical and Process Engineering, Mr Sunny Iyuke, as new principal and Chief Executive Officer of Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, Delta State. Until his appointment,  the Prof. who came with the vision to digitalizing PTI was the Head of School of Chemical & Metallurgical Engineering of the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.
Less than two years of his stay in the Institute, The Prof has been honored with so many awards and commendations for his great innovations which includes:
Reconnection of the burnt 33KVA line which has led to regular power and water supplies in the institute; uninterrupted academic activities; commencement of National Diploma Programme in Computer science and information technology; introduction of post HND and Masters Programme in Petroleum Engineering; industrial peace on campus; confirmation of 159 staff employed in 2015; revitalization of the offshore technology centre (OTC); establishment of skill development academy centre at the osubi campus; reactivation of research and development directorate;  construction of 300 seater auditorium and road network on campus; renovation of the ultra-modern swimming pool;  renovation of male and female hostels;  opening of the long abandon female NDDC hostel; fixing of all the street lights in the school premises. Also, the additional male hostel project that has been on hold since 2007 is now on use and the road leading to the hostel is under massive construction.
Furthermore, renovations are going on in different areas of the school, like the General Studies department building and construction of the new lecture theatre.
Other achievements were mentioned by both old and current executives that spoke with Campus Life.
"Mr principal prof. Sunny Iyuke with the one year I spent with him in office, I must say he has achieved more than you can think of. His coming to the institute lead to great achievements which includes;
In his two years in the office, he has conducted 2 convocation a record that had not been in the institute before.
It was the first time in over 15 years that graduate  from the institute are mobilized for NYSC the same year they graduated due to the smooth running of the calendar
His managerial skills have seen him manage agitations from both students and staff amicably a record that has not been set by any principal without protest and strike
He brought up policy that has been inclusive of the students more than the staff in term of student’s welfare and comfort. I must say a man like Prof Sunny Iyuke deserves more than an accolade." Theophilus Ukuyoma, SUG president 2016/2017 academic session.
Comr Akamune Oke Stage, SUG President 2014/2015 session described it as a 'ROUND PEG IN A ROUND HOLE.' "The proof of great leadership and transformation agent. As a passionate Student lovely Ex President of PTI, I have being on the watch and the management led by Prof. Iyuke have done marvelously well beyond expectation." He added.
"This is the first time according to my knowledge that  P.T.I has a great leader as Principal after many years. Professor Sunny Iyuke brought P.T.I from a 'Thick hole of Darkness’ of financial mismanagement, and nepotistic appointment of directors, to the mountain top of  'Bright lights and innovations.' In my opinion, there is no room for comparison!" Oride  Christopher, SUG President  Aspirant  2017/2018.
"Prof Sunny Iyuke has been a blessing to the PTI community since the day of his appointment as Principal/CEO of the institute. What thrills me most is the fact that Prof Iyuke did not just come to take up the appointment as just a job. He is passionate about it.  Sometimes, during weekends, you see him, simply dressed, taking a walk round the school, visits the students' mess when students are viewing a match, just observes and leaves.
I believe in a few years from now, Prof Iyuke and his management team will take PTI to a world class standard. Kudos!!"  -Omosebi Adedoyin SUG Secretary General 2017/2018
"The Principal, Prof Sunny Iyuke,  is a hardworking, kind hearted, innovative and easy going man.  Prof Iyuke is a simple man who you can walk up to even outside his office and you'll be rest assured he will listen to you. I was shocked the day I saw him at the new lab in the school premises on a Sunday evening. He was just taking a walk and funnily, he was alone.  I went to him and greeted him. We got talking and he told me he was going round the school to assist what was happening. Imagine! On a weekend, he still mapped out time to check the situation of things around the school. There and then, I knew PTI has gotten the long awaited Messiah that will perfect all imperfections."
-Akpomudhere Maryjane SUG Welfare director, 2017/2018
"The principal, Prof. Sunny Iyuke, is a father to all. Few times I had the opportunity to be in council chambers to discuss union issues with the management, I see display of humility and wisdom in the way he tackles union issues. He is a good listener, a friendly father and above all he's visionary."
-Godwin David Okemena, Junior Chamber International, PTI president, 2017/2018
Prof Sunny has re-engineered the vision, mission and actualization of the essence of PTI establishment. We hope for more positive transformation.
AFOLABI Ajibola former Students'Press President (TAT) and Students' Care Taker Committee Secretary General 2008/2009 session.
On this note, Comrade Stage who on behalf of PTI community, lauds & appreciate the good works of the Prof. & his team of immeasurable transformation, use the opportunity to indulge the management to do more & keep the good works, and also call all leadership, individuals & cooperate agencies to support the vision, mission and transformation agenda of the CEO/Principal.

JAMB TAKES OVER PTI

The Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, Delta State has been included with other Nigerian institutions in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) admissions brochure. Gbenga Ojo reports.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has taken over the admissions procedure of the Petroleum Training Institute(PTI) and other special tertiary Institutions in Nigeria who were not conducting their admissions through JAMB.

This, being a recent development, is a Federal Government directive in order to achieve uniformity and smooth admission processes in all the institutions of higher learning, according to the Public Relations Officer of the Institute, Mr. Brown Ukanefimone.

The Petroleum Training Institute was established by Act No 37 of September 19, 1972, and subsequently amended by Act 52 of January 1, 1975. The Institute provides courses of Instruction, training and research in oil/gas technology and production of technologists and technicians and other such skilled personnel  required for oil production and allied disciplines.

PTI's vision is to become the leading oil and gas technological institute in Africa. While her mission is to provide competent technological manpower through quality training, research, and consultancy for the petroleum and allied industries.

PTI awards National Diploma, Higher National Diploma and other certificate programmes such as General Welding and has been admitting  applicants over the years through entrance examination tagged "PTI Entrance Exam". The exam is usually being conducted in eight (8) states across Nigeria namely Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Enugu, Sokoto, Kaduna, Jigawa and Abuja. While Higher National Diploma (HND) applicants go through interviews conducted only in the Institute.

With the current development, PTI National Diploma applicants will have to apply for admission through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and must choose PTI as their first choice. However, those applying for Certificate and Higher National Diploma programmes will still undergo the PTI entrance examinations and interview procedures respectively for their admission.

The student affairs Officer of the Institute Mr. Ajima Jackson told Campus Life that it is a welcome development, "though it will deny the Institute of some internal revenue but it will definitely expose PTI more to the world and also makes NYSC  mobilization processes  easier for the Institute" he added.

The President of the Student Union Government, Comrade Theophilus Ukuyoma said "I don't welcome the idea,  because it will kill the pride of the Institute. PTI is a special school that was established by an Act, and not like other institutions. I believe that PTI admission processes should be different from others."

PTI Alumni General Secretary, Mr. Yahaya Moses said he will  support the development only if other special Institutes  truly joined the list as it was announced.

"JAMB taking over PTI will be a great advantage and open doors to so many aspiring students, but Proper screening should be done after the JAMB in order to maintain the Institute's Glory and Standard." National Association of Yoruba Students PTI Chapter Aare (King),  Oba Olumide Ajifowobaje told Campus Life.

So many questions that linger on the lips of Nigerian students are, where does PTI now belong-- Oil and Gas sector or Ministry of Education? Will the Standard still remain? Is the Institute deviating from the purpose of which it was established?

Mr. Brown Ukanefimone cleared the air when he stated that nothing has Changed about the Institute, and that her purpose still remain the same. "We are only following Federal Government instructions." He said.

PTI Holds Student 's week

Students at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, Delta State, have marked the 2016 SUG week with Mr. Macho contest, Beauty contest, indoor and outdoor games. GBENGA OJO captures the highlights.

The events at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, started with
a rally. Expectedly, students turned out in large numbers, sporting all kinds of attire, to dance round the school premises, it was the first day of the Students' Week, a Monday which ended up with an opening ceremony of inter departmental football match.

Tuesday was the “Old skool Day” where boys turned to men and ladies turned
to girls. It was interesting as many old school songs and outfits were displayed.
Wednesday was the Rag Day. As early as 6am, many students had started leaving the campus dressed like real mad men. Off to Effurun town and Warri metropolis they went, in search of money. Some came back very late in the evening smiling with fat pockets while others came back like wounded lions, grumbling of “stingy people”. “O boy na wah oh! Na only N500 I fit make since morning, dis Buhari time self” complained by a particular boy who
warned that his name should not be published. A poor man is indeed an angry
man. No one seemed bothered by the fact that Rag Day originally meant to raise
money for the poor has become an acceptable way for students to enrich
their pockets. The same day, before some came back, they had used the proceeds of their ragging to buy new wardrobe.

Later Wednesday evening was bonfire night where the popular DJ Walter thrilled the students in attendance with good music. Thursday was tagged “Jeans and Jersey day”, it was a thrilling moment as the student came out with colours of various Europe football clubs, making the
campus very colourful.

The atmosphere was mechanized and electrified on Friday as Mechanical
department won the final of inter departmental football match while
Electrical also won the final of inter departmental basketball match.

It was on Friday evening that the unforgettable Miss PTI and Mr. Macho
Contest held. A lot of talents and varieties were displayed. Choosing a symbolic Kings and queens for festivities is an
ancient custom in Europe in which beautiful young women symbolized their
nation’s virtues and other abstract ideas, with the purpose of promoting the
self-esteem of the contestant. Girls who compete feel a sense of belonging
with other contestants, and the larger pageant community.

The contestants came up one after the other in different outfits and costumes that best described their day-today activities and culture. A contestant hijacked the show as she danced and rapped in a potent and romantic style. The audience, which was spellbound, yelled
and screamed in appreciation. The boys also were not left behind as they flex their muscles, each with the intention of being the “Macho Man”.

The high point of the occasion was when the winners were announced: Mirabirth Oodo (Industrial Safety and Environmental
Technology) and Gideon Ejukorlem (Mechanical Engineering) emerged Miss PTI and Mr. Macho for 2016/2017 session.

The beauty queen told The Actualizers Team how her confidence and the experience she got from her last contest (PTI Miss Fresh) where she lost,
gave her the victory. She returns all the glory to God Almighty and appreciates all her friends for their support.

The SUG Vice President, Henry Obinna, who was the organizer of the event,
said: “It was not easy to organize such an event. Finance was our major challenge, due to the situation of the country right now, getting a sponsor was very cumbersome, but we thank God that the program was successful.”

Memorable union poll at PTI

Students of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Effurun, Delta State, have elected leaders in a process described as free and fair. GBENGA OJO reports.

The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Effurun, Delta State, last weekend, came alive with Students’ Union Government (SUG) elections. The election came after
weeks of electioneering, which made the campus tense. Prior to the polls, the aspirants moved round the faculties
and departments to canvass for votes. The campus was covered with posters and banners of various shades, but
none  contained detailed programmes. Students vowed not to vote for any candidate who did not show how he
would achieve his programmes.

The electioneering took a dramatic turn when some faceless students pasted a list of aspirants they labelled as “arrogant” and “stingy”. While some of the aspirants
rendered free haircuts and tutorials to students, Others offered free fumigation in hostel rooms, clearing of drainages, sweeping of corridors and supplying
generators to hostels to enable students charge their phones.

To ensure the salient issues of the election were not lost, The Actualisers Team (TAT), a campus press club, organised a debate for the four candidates vying for the
union president. They were Theophilus Ukuyoma, Success Ogbe, Joseph Omezi and Wesley Onokpite. Students listened to the candidates and assessed their
manifestoes. Some of the aspirants were booed for their ‘bad grammar’. Theophilus, was, however, named Obama, because of his command of the English language. Wesley, a physically-challenged person, got the audience excited during the manifesto when he said: “Deformity of
a man is the deformity of his mind and not his physical deformity.”

The highpoint of the event was the sudden change of the music being played at the debate from hip-hop to worship songs. This doused the tension during the
debate, as aspirants and their supporters went on their knees to ask for divine intervention in the election.

The election held last Saturday across the faculties of the Institute. Members of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) and National Association of
Polytechnics Students (NAPS) monitored the process to ensure transparency.
When the voting ended, Students’ Affairs Officer Prince Audu Shakamele, declared Theophilus,  HND 1 Mechanical Engineering student, president-elect. Wesley, the physically-challenged candidate and Welding Engineering and Offshore Technology (WEOT) student,
came second.

Others elected were Vice President, Jeremiah Bass; General Secretary, Evans Eriamiatoe; Social Director, Obasuyi Osayande; Financial Secretary, Ernest
Ememeruria; Assistant-General Secretary, Daniel Udomah, Treasurer, Blessing Monye; Public Relation Officer (PRO), George Anadi; Sport Director, Anthony
Igbigbi, and Welfare Director, Cyril Obiora.
Shakamele praised Wesley for displaying “uncommon courage” to contest the election, despite his physical condition.

The Students’ Affairs Officer placed Wesley on scholarship as reward for his courage. Students’ Representative Committee (SRC) member-elect
for WEOT, Amadi Nyekachi, promised to pay Wesley's school fee in the coming session.

In an interview with CAMPUSLIFE, Wesley said he lost the ability to walk when he was two. He said he had never allowed his disability to affect his ambition to be a
professional welder. He said: “If intellectuals are to be counted on this campus, I would be one of them.”
Independent Students Electoral Committee (ISEC) Chairman, Daniel Omeife, expressed satisfaction with the
outcome of the election, stressing that process was not easy.

Rita Chukwu, a student of Electrical Electronics Engineering, described the election as free and fair, urging the losers to accept the results in good faith.
Joseph Omezi, a presidential contestant, said he was satisfied with the outcome of the process, saying: “I lost the election, because Theophilus touched the areas I
could not get to.” The president-elect, Theophilus, thanked students for
electing him, promising to execute his programmes.
